Reuse of the wellfare building at Adamstuen
Restore: Components 2022 Future buildt prize nominee
Reuse of the Welfare Building at Adamstuen is about discovering potential in what is already built.
The building, drawn by Rolf Ramm-Østgaard in 1970, came as a reaction to the need of social spaces for the Veterinary students. In 2020, all the students were moved to a new campus in Ås, and the discussion about the future of these vacant buildings is ongoing. As the life of the students and the resources that come with them are gone, the project intends to bring back life to Adamstuen.

Intervention 1: The new entrance is a way of allowing more light to enter and is also giving a wink to the pedestrians walking from the east. It has a windbreak, an unacclimatized space for a pram, or a quick phone call in the rain. The fastening of the roof follows some of the same logic as Rolf Ramm Østgaard made, a beam fastened to the column inside. This intervention makes it possible to close off different parts of the building, without feeling like you enter through the back door.
Intervention 2:
Towards the west, I propose to cut a hole in the facade, and the hole serves as a Kiosk, connecting to the existing kitchen. This is a way for velhuset to show presence in Adamstuen, and make more people get a relationship with the building. The new proposal also consists of a bench that moves around the facade to the vest, cast in concrete at the same height as the foundation. The intervention creates a different situation than having a quiet conversation in the courtyard on the opposite side.

A working goal has been to discover possibilities within the building and its rooms before finding a new use. This method is sustainable, cheap, and realistic. My architectural focus is on the social aspect: To create a building that can facilitate different happenings, for different groups of people in Adamstuen. Rooms with different scales, a place where you can come alone or in big groups. The project facilitates a mom and her teenage daughter in the same building, without it being awkward. The daughter can be at a croquis class in one area and the mom can attend pole dance without the daughter having to be embarrassed. And no one needs to enter through the back door.
